The primary mission of the California Institute for Rural
Studies is to conduct action-oriented, empirically verifiable
research that addresses barriers to sustainable development
in rural California and the Central Valley in particular. CIRS
has conducted a wide range of research studies that have spanned
the issue continuum from natural resource conservation to social
justice. Underlying this research orientation is the view of
the organization that the trajectory of social, technological,
and environmental change in rural California is, in many ways,
unsustainable in respect to long-term environmental processes
and unjust in respect to the values and expectations of our
democracy.

migration. This will be accomplished by (1) providing a venue
for regular dialogue about migration and development; (2) sponsoring
workshops and lectures on various aspects of international migration;
and (3) encouraging collaborative activities with several neighboring
institutions (e.g., New York University, the University of Pennsylvania,
and Harvard University) where distinguished scholars are conducting
innovative research about migration and development. The Center
will also build bridges with other programs and field specializations,
promote and diversify collaborative research activity about
migration and development, maintain a data archive of unique
studies about migration and development, and enhance the course

of private research firms. As the only institute in the United
States devoted exclusively to understanding and educating the
public on the causes and consequences of human mobility at both
origin and destination countries, CMS performs a critical function
in migration studies as it generates and facilitates the dissemination

The Programme will involve about 20 projects which will broaden
our understanding of the new and increasingly significant place
of globe-spanning social networks in labour, business and commodity
markets, political movements and cultural flows. The programme
will concentrate on globalisation from below and transnational
communities as products of, and catalysts for, contemporary
globalisation processes. The social forms, political challenges,
cultural resources and group identities generated by the linkage
of groups in several geographical locations represent an increasingly
important dimension of the shift toward new kinds of cosmopolitanism
described in much work on globalisation. It is likely that transnational
communities will play an ever more important role in shaping
world-wide social, cultural, economic and political processes.
